Today we’ll discuss how to seamlessly change colors in crochet.
Have you been intimidated by projects that have lots of color changes? Maybe you’re not sure the best way to go about it? In the beginning, I was too. It held me back from trying a lot of really cool projects.
Turns out it’s actually super simple, and this technique works no matter what kind of stitch you’re using.
This technique will come in super handy next week when I’ll share an introduction to tapestry crochet. A little disclaimer though. Tapestry crochet isn’t quite as beginner friendly, but is suitable for an experienced beginner.
I also have a video tutorial for you at the end of this post.

Color Changes
You will always change colors in the last step of your crochet stitch. For example, with single crochet you would insert your hook in the next stitch, yarn over and draw up a loop (step 1), yarn over and draw through two loops (step 2). When color changing, you’ll complete step 2 with the new color.
Let’s take a look.
For single crochet, on the last stitch of your current color, insert your hook and pull up a loop. You’ll have two loops on your hook.

Grab your new color and lay it over your hook.

Pull the new color through the two loops on your hook.

Continue crocheting in your new color.

To change colors with a double crochet, yarn over, insert your hook in the next stitch. Yarn over, draw through two loops. Two loops remaining on hook. Place your new color on your hook, and pull it through the last two loops.

And that’s it! You can color change to your hearts content!
Pro Tip
It’s completely normal for your stitches to get a bit wonky when changing colors. You can gently pull on the yarn tails to adjust. See exactly what I mean in the video below.
