How to Crochet the Trinity Stitch – An Easy Star Stitch Alternative

The crochet trinity stitch is a surprisingly simple stitch that is great for advanced beginners. It’s beautifully textured, plus reversible, making it perfect for just about any project.

The trinity stitch looks a lot like the crochet star stitch, but is so much easier! This is a great alternative if you’re not quite ready to tackle the star stitch, but still want all that yummy texture.

The trinity stitch is made up of three simple stitches: chains, single crochets, and single crochet three together. The single row repeat is easy to memorize and works up pretty quickly, making it perfect for beginners.

Let’s jump right in! As always, you can find a helpful video tutorial at the bottom of this post.

Special Stitch

The trinity stitch is basically just a single crochet three together (sc3tog), but the difference is where you begin. To sc3tog, insert your hook in the indicated stitch, yarn over and draw up a loop, insert your hook in the next stitch, yarn over and draw up a loop, and insert your hook into the following stitch, yarn over and draw up a loop. You should have 4 loops on your hook. Yarn over, and draw through all 4 loops.

The trick with the trinity stitch is to begin the sc3tog in the same stitch as the last stitch you just worked. (Say that 5 times fast!). The image below shows where to insert your hook when working the foundation row.

To begin, chain any even number of stitches. For this tutorial I began with a chain of 20.

Row 1

Step 1: Single crochet in the second chain from the hook.

Step 2: Beginning in the same chain as the single crochet just worked, sc3tog.

Step 3: Loosely chain 1. We will work into this stitch later, so it’s helpful to have it a bit loose.

Step 4: Beginning in the same chain you just worked into, sc3tog.

Step 5: Loosely chain 1.

Repeat steps 4 and 5 until you get to the end of the row. The last loop of your sc3tog should land in the last chain.

Step 6: Sc in the same stitch as the last stitch.

Row 2

Step 1: Chain 1 and turn your work.

Step 2: Single crochet in the first stitch.

Step 3: Sc3tog by beginning in the same stitch as the single crochet you just worked, the top of the next stitch, and the following chain st.

Step 4: Loosely chain 1.

Step 5: Sc3tog by beginning in the same stitch you just worked in to, the top of the next stitch, and the following chain.

Step 6: Loosely chain 1.

Repeat steps 5 and 6 until you get to the end of the row. The last loop of your sc3tog should land in the last single crochet from the row below.

Step 7: Single crochet in the same stitch as the last stitch.

Repeat Row 2 until your piece reaches the desired length.

That’s it! The trinity stitch crochets up quickly once you get used to the placement.
